Our Taro and Kava Story

Babakobau Farming Scheme (BFS) is a boutique taro and kava agribusiness venture based on Koro Island in the Lomaiviti Group.

The Venture has embraced the theme Nurturing Sustainability for its long-term success in the agribusiness relating to the taro, kava and copra supply chain.

As the business ventures forward, it has adopted and implemented strategies that embrace the pillars of performance excellence in productivity and innovations, care for the environment, as an investor in people and returning to the community.

In this regard our mission is: Keeping our youth gainfully employed through the marketing of their produce.

The history of Babakobau Farming Scheme dates back to its humble beginnings in 1997 when it first forged into the copra business by selling its own sourced from its 60 acres farm, to the copra millers at Savusavu.

A year later it started buying mature coconuts from nearby villages, filleting and then drying them before selling these also to the aforementioned millers.

In 1999, with the maturity of its first batch of kava BFS entered the larger Suva market commencing retail operations at the Suva Market trading as ‘Muanivanua Kava Dealers’.

This presence in the main trading centre of Suva also enabled exposure to major wholesalers to enable the setting up of a wholesale and retail operation back on the island of Koro in 2000.

In 2001 BFS commenced supplying dalo and kava to Suva based exporters.

After over a decade of stimulating agribusiness on Koro and familiarity with the exporting players, it now seeks to export its own produce, notably taro and kava with frozen tapioca to follow.

The Venture now is able to deliver roughly 12 tonnes of taro and a tonne of kava per week for the export market from its own farms. Other complimentary and downstream activities include agro-management and advisory services.

Significant investments are now being channeled into the fields of research, development and training to assure the Venture’s competitive edge well into the future.

Our business is based on the premise 'the customer is king’.

Being mindful of your needs, we place quality, consistency and fair value highly to ensure your continued support. Consequently, we strive to better your expectations.

We believe we have laid the groundwork for these dictates.

Director Operations: Sakiasi Babakobau is responsible for having grown the venture. After spending years on a foreign-waters fishing vessel with no real equity to fall on after years fishing, he returned to Koro Island and worked his land.

After all, the whole purpose of the physical life is to build up equity to sustain us in our golden years, and the rest is history as they say....
