Take advantage of our taro-tactics that ensure no more worries over your taro supplies.

Samoan Tausala or Pink Taro

Our taro-tactics on pre-harvest care:

Coming up with our taro-tactics we had to combine the material with the spiritual. So firstly, for the material..

1. Nutrition: Fiji's tropical marine climate and volcanic soils are ideal for taro as well as other crops. And with only 10% of our total land area arable, much of our taro grow on newly cleared lands. Accordingly, our taro grow on well mulched and fertile fields. Free of the need for chemical manure.

2. Pest: Our taro are free of any pest as quarantine measures exist to isolate the bug that had visited parts of the islands.

3. Disease and weed control: Farmers are urged to minimize the use of herbicides by mulching. Diseases are controlled when cultivars are selected.

4. Crop Load: With idle lands now being farmed the crop load per hectare is well below safe limits.

5. Water management: As Fiji receives sufficient rainfall throughout the year our taro are adequately watered.

6. Shading: Minimal shading exists as plots are farmed around coconut trees.

7. Maturity indices: Fiji taro varieties mature between 6-to 12months.

Our taro tactics on post-harvest care:

Now the spiritual: From planting to harvesting, personal attention due to the absence of automation is given to every taro root. Great care is taken otherwise farmers know they'll lose out with unsold produce.

1. Methods of harvest: Using digging sticks to loosen soil enable easy uprooting of taro roots. These are then gathered, cleaned and washed, air dried and sorted into sacks for processing.

2. Handling: Careful handling reflecting the 'bula' spirit is rendered to ensure quality at retail level. Leaf stems are cut from the top of the corms that meet importing countries' requirements. Taro corms are then brought to a central place and roots, soil and debris are removed. Cleaning is by scrapers or water. Excess surface water from cleaning are dried before the taro is packed to avoid microbial rot.

3. Grading: During the cleaning process taro is sorted by size and variety. Examined for excess soil, softness and decay, they are also ensured to be free of deep cuts and bruises. Shape is round to spherical and free from any deformities or accessory roots.

Taro sizes are classed into two; 1Kg. to 2.5Kg and 2.6Kg. to 3.5Kg. and can be varied.

4. Storage: Taro is packed in poly propylene bags currently and stored in refrigerator containers at between 7-14 degrees centigrade with relative humidity between 85% to 90% if no further processing is required.

If processing into snap-frozen labeled packs is required than taro sacks are immediately consigned to processors for this process.

5. Pre-shipment care: Taro is stored in refrigerated containers ready for export markets.

6. Transport: Frequent shipping is available to Japan, NZ, Australia and the US west coast including Canada, as well as to Polynesia and Micronesia.

Additionally, airfreight services ply the Fiji skies daily for the wide world.

Will our taro-tactics ensure good quality when the consignment arrives?

You bet! Our taro-tactics seek that: Remember; as economy is the basis of society - and for our society to develop, the economy must be stable - the ideal economy should combine the spiritual and the material, and the best commodities to trade in are sincerity and love.

We nourish our taro on virgin fertile lands, devote the personal attention and careful handling required and store them at temperatures conducive to long life. All to ensure good quality Fiji taro when it arrives.
