Kava-kava and kava are synonymous in this part of the world. In fact the latter is more acceptable.
Kava-kava then refers to the traditional drink of the Pacific just as wine, beer and other ales abound for all societies.
But while it is the traditional drink, there is no such thing in the customs of old for traditional drinking. This traditional (read: frequent) drinking today is the result of changing lifestyles and the overly burdened psyche brought on by 21st century demands. Stress, insomnia and depression are familiar bothers, eh?
Here in the Pacific however our national kava drink - long used as our foundation drink - is now found to be the perfect herbal drink for these modern ills. While there are fears in some new quarters about the unhealthy impact of kava, you'll find in the following pages links to academic studies saying these are unfounded.
To understand the spirit of the kava-kava plant from the Fiji perspective, we should go to the beginning to the time of the floods when the great God Yahweh fed-up with the evils of His created images sought to purge the world and start anew with Noah's obedient family.
We branch off from here with the sight of the flood and the murkiness of the waters, as the world was a big bowl of dirt.
Our forefathers then before the advent of Christianity, were tipped of this calamity by their tuned-in god who gave them the kava plant to be their traditional drink - whenever they had matters to be addressed.
Not only was the kava drink a murky colored liquid to remind them of the flood, it was also a numbing drink where spoken words were a premium and so were well-thought out when finally uttered.
Great care had to be taken in these deliberations and winning solutions for all had to be found. Otherwise, the outcome would be murky just as the drink they were sitting around, leaving an aftertaste they were well aware of.
And if you're fond of sweetening kava, you are missing out on the very essence of kava and its full beneficial impact. I'm sorry to astound you, but you won't fully gain the benefits if you don't pay with the experience of this awful taste. As the cliche goes - no pain, no gain, right? Sure you can suck on a pineapple, mango or some other piece of fruit after a bowl, or even a piece of taro; just make sure you pay first with that horrid taste.
This then is the regard our forefathers bequeathed us whenever kava-kava ceremonies were to be held. It was to be a solemn drink, served by young men to the gathered elders deliberating serious issues.
Decisions made around a kava bowl were made after careful discussions amidst great clarity of mind! And generally were the best - collective - decisions.
With the breakdown of the village system as emerging life-trends ventured families away into towns and cities, many were left without the leadership inherent in their village settings.
Now when we acknowledge that there are two types of people - and that there are more followers than leaders, the beginnings of the problems plaguing our societies are then understood. While kava continually gives the sought-after clarity, the visionary input of leaders present in village life is missing.
I view the necessity of evolving leaders in modern Pacific communities from mere democratic figureheads to one genuinely concerned for the welfare of his newly found tribe members. This is where modern governments can look to remedy the causes of the problems plaguing us. But this site is about kava and we'll now look at the kava-kava drink.
While the folks of old only drank the root of the plant, leaving the stems for propagation purposes, the market economy bastardized the process, permitting stems, stem-shavings and even leaves to be sold to Big Pharmaceuticals.
Sure these other kava parts have their benefits they just were never meant to be ingested in the volume and frequency required by the mighty dollar. This resulted in the 'liver' problems associated with that effort for no such complaint existed with the traditional users.
In considering all of the above, we have dedicated this site to only sell the root of the kava-kava plant. We have seen the various offerings available to you the consumer with their pricing differentials and see our niche perfectly created.
